Um dos recentes lançamentos da Netflix, The Get Down, é uma série de seis episódios que explora os sonhos e aspirações de jovens pobres, latinos e negros do Bronx na Nova Iorque dos anos 70, através da arte. Misturando acontecimentos reais e ficcionais, a série explora o período histórico do fim da era Disco e do surgimento do Hip-hop em Nova Iorque. É claro que as tensões urbanas são importantíssimas para a construção desse cenário, pois o Hip-hop surge como uma reação aos conflitos sociais do período. Em vários momentos da série, é evidente o quanto a arte da periferia é marginalizada e criminalizada.
O Hip-hop tem quatro pilares, a instrumentação do DJ, o Break dance, o Rap, e o grafite. Na abordagem da série, este último foi, talvez, o mais visível dos quatro elementos que formam o Hip-hop e por isso, o mais criminalizado pelas camadas mais elitizadas da sociedade e por políticos oportunistas que tentavam desqualificar as manifestações artísticas das camadas sociais menos favorecidas para angariar votos e doações de campanha, sob a promessa da gentrificação.
É através da história do jovem Ezequiel (Justice Smith) que adentramos esse universo. A música, em The Get Down, é mais que um elemento de fundo para a história, ela tece as relações entre os personagens. Desde a música gospel na igreja ao Get Down de Grandmaster Flash, a música é fundamental para os acontecimentos importantes na vida dos personagens principais. Até mesmo a narração da série é feita em Rap pelo próprio Ezequiel no ano de 1996. Portanto, o cuidado com a escolha dessa trilha sonora foi fundamental para o sucesso da série, tornando a trilha sonora de The Get Down imperdível.
A trilha mistura clássicos da Era disco e composições originais, além de incorporar músicas mais recentes ao repertório sem que esses anacronismos soem deslocados dentro do contexto. É importante ressaltar que The Get Down é um registro ficcional e não histórico. Ou seja, não é um documentário, mas um tributo.
